El rojo es por vida, no por sangre

Red is for life, not for blood

Light, sound and sensory piece · web cartography · 2026

The light box switched off: a black cube on a steel baseWhen someone approaches, a warm light reveals the outline of a hand behind the acrylicA hand touches the box and the light turns red Render

In the Pride flag, red stands for life.

What almost never appears in a police report is the life of the person who suffered it. This piece starts from that absence.

The work draws on open data from Visible, the platform run by AMICUS that documents prejudice-motivated violence against LGBTQ+ people in Mexico.

It has two parts. A light box on a steel base holds a hand behind the acrylic: the window of a community asking for help. Up close, you feel a heartbeat and hear the data turned into sound.

The second is a web cartography that maps the records across Mexico City, turns each attack into sound and also makes the missing information visible. The piece engages with Judith Butler’s idea of precarious life: lives whose loss is not recorded or mourned in the same way.

Every recorded attack makes a sound; every gap in the records becomes visible too. The map is the part of the work anyone can visit from anywhere.
